DESCRIPTION:The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) are organizing the “ITU-ETSI Symposium on ICT Sustainability: Standards Driving Environmental Innovation”\, which will take place from 11–12 December 2024\, in ITU Headquarters in Geneva\, Switzerland.\n\nThe ETSI and ITU ICT Sustainability Symposium: Standards Driving Environmental Innovation will bring together industry leaders\, policymakers\, researchers and stakeholders to explore the crucial role of standards in promoting sustainable ICT practices. Standards guide the development of technologies that minimize environmental impact and enhance energy efficiency.\n\nThrough the circular design of ICT products\, networks and services\, standards ensure environmentally friendly technology. Lifecycle assessments consider all stages from creation to disposal\, helping to assess\, analyse and reduce the overall environmental footprint.\n\nEnvironmental impact assessment reporting fosters accountability by evaluating and communicating the environmental effects of ICT products\, networks and services. The digital product passport provides detailed environmental information\, enabling informed consumer choices.\n\nAdapting ICT products\, networks and services to climate change ensures resilience\, while standards for environmental conditions guarantee efficient and safe operation. Furthermore\, ICT solutions enable the environmental impact in other sectors to be reduced.\n\nThese topics form the backbone of the symposium\, driving the agenda for a greener digital future by highlighting the intersections between technology\, standards and sustainability.\nThe objectives of the symposium include: \n\n\nInforming participants about the latest standardisation activities for sustainable ICT.\nEducation on leveraging environmental sustainability standards to support policies and regulations related to ICT products\, networks and services.\nShowcasing cutting-edge innovations\, case examples and research projects of ICT initiatives for sustainability.\nFacilitating networking opportunities with experts\, speakers\, and stakeholders from various organizations.\n\n​Participation in the Symposium open to all. DESCRIPTION:About this talk\n\nNon-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) are wireless communication platforms operating above the surface of the Earth\, typically achieved using satellites in low\, medium or geostationary orbit as well as drones\, High Altitude Platforms (HAPS) and other aerial systems. A component of 5G since 3GPP Release 17\, there is now general agreement that future 6G will feature the “native integration” of NTN from the outset. Recognizing the importance of the topic\, ETSI recently held a Conference on ‘Non-Terrestrial Networks\, a Native Component of 6G’ (https://www.etsi.org/events/2306-etsi-ntn-conference#pane-1/). The conference examined NTN use cases\, candidate technologies\, current research status and standardization roadmaps. Due to the intense interest in the 6G and NTN topics\, this ETSI webinar will allow further discussion around the topic as our expert speakers will discuss and develop the priority areas for 6G and NTN.
