6G-NTN Partner Alessandro Guidotti Discusses Advancements in Non-Terrestrial Networks at IEEE Future Networks Satellite Working Group

On Wednesday, 18 December 2024, 6G-NTN Project Partner Alessandro Guidotti from University of Bologna delivered a compelling presentation at the IEEE Future Networks Satellite Working Group event. In his remote address, Alessandro guided attendees through the future of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) as they transition from 5G to 6G.

In his presentation, titled “Evolving Non-Terrestrial Networks from 5G to 6G,” Alessandro offered insights into the growing importance of network energy efficiency alongside system performance metrics. He emphasised how this focus extends across both wired and wireless networks, with significant implications for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs).

He also delved into key aspects of NTN/TN integration, addressing innovative strategies to balance energy consumption and performance. Alessandro discussed topics such as the conveyance of energy consumption information, dynamic adjustments to optimise energy-performance trade-offs, and the potential of AI/ML to drive smarter network management. He also highlighted the role of virtualisation, multi-level orchestration, and O-RAN functional splitting in extending NTN edge capabilities.

The session underscored the critical role of NTNs in advancing global connectivity and achieving a more sustainable and efficient network architecture.
