6G-NTN co-organizes a workshop on integrated 6G architectures at IEEE PIMRC 2025 in Istanbul

6G-NTN took a central role in organizing a workshop at the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) 2025 in Istanbul. Titled “Integrated 6G Architectures and Technologies for Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks,” the workshop was a collaborative effort of Alessandro Vanelli-Coralli, Alessandro Guidotti, and Carla Amatetti from UNIBO and the partners from UNITY-6G and 5G-STARDUST projects. The PIMRC conference is a leading forum for wireless communications, and this workshop provided a timely platform for experts to address the complex challenges of 6G development.

The workshop was opened by a 6G-NTN partner Dorin Panaitopol from Thales who delivered a presentation titled “5G NTN Evolutions Towards 6G,” offering critical insights into the future trajectory of non-terrestrial networks. The workshop then delved into one of the most pressing questions for the next generation of mobile communication: how to create a unified network that seamlessly combines terrestrial systems with non-terrestrial assets like satellites, high-altitude platforms, and drones. The conversation focused on tackling the complexity that arises from this multi-layered environment, ensuring consistent and reliable service delivery.

Beyond the technical challenges, the workshop also placed a strong emphasis on achieving sustainable 6G networks that are not only powerful but also environmentally conscious. Researchers and industry leaders presented new findings on a range of crucial topics, including strategies for spectrum coexistence, developing seamless handover techniques, guaranteeing service continuity across diverse platforms, and optimizing drone-based NTN systems. By bringing these contributions together, the workshop advanced the collective understanding of how to build a truly interoperable 6G ecosystem spanning both ground and space.

About IEEE PIMRC

Established in 1989, the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) has grown into a premier global event for the wireless community. The 2025 conference welcomed researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers for four days of engaging keynotes, technical sessions, and tutorials, reaffirming its role in shaping the direction of wireless technology.
