6G-NTN Technical Manager, Nicolas Chuberre discusses 6G and NTN in the August edition of the ETSI Magazine ‘Enjoy!’

Nicolas Chuberre, 6G-NTN Technical Manager and Solution Line Manager at Thales Alenia Space, shared his expert insights in a recent interview for the August 2024 edition of ETSI ‘Enjoy!’ Magazine – titled “NTN – Non-Terrestrial Networks Mastering Tech Standardization with ETSI.

NTNs have been recognized as an integral part of both the 5G and 6G ecosystems. These networks promise to deliver seamless global coverage and enhanced connectivity for various communication applications. In this in-depth interview, Nicolas discusses the pivotal role of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in the progression towards 6G, offering his expert insights into their integration and future impact.

A significant focus of the discussion is on the broad scope of satellite communications, with an emphasis on how these networks serve various market segments, from direct connectivity to handheld devices to broadcast TV services and broadband internet connectivity.
Another key topic is the commercial rationale for integrating satellite networks into the mobile ecosystem. In the interview, it emerges how standardised access is essential for achieving global coverage, reducing costs, and avoiding technologies that are proprietary to different vendors.

Sustainability is also a crucial aspect of 6G, and the interview sheds light on how NTN can contribute to sustainability goals by optimising energy consumption and reducing the environmental impact of satellite operations.

6G-NTN project partner, Thales Alenia Space’s active involvement in developing satellite network solutions and contributing to NTN standards is also highlighted, together with ETSI’s role in standardising NTN.
