6G-NTN at the 6G Forum

On October 1, 2024, a 6G-NTN Project Partner, Dorin Panaitopol, an Advanced Radio Access Principal Engineer at THALES SIX GTS France participated in the 6G Forum organized by the RCR Wireless News.

Organized under the theme “The Next Leap: Will 6G Deliver?,” the 6G Forum gathered 32 speakers from around the world, including carriers, policymakers, R&D labs, system integrators, hardware and software providers, and test and measurement providers.

The event, chaired by Catherine Sbeglia Nin, Managing Editor at RCR Wireless News, featured a dynamic agenda, including expert presentations, interviews, and panel discussion exploring critical questions about the path to 6G deployment.  Key topics included the feasibility of the 2030 timeline for 6G, regional differences in 6G priorities across the USA, EMEA, and APAC, and the likelihood of achieving global standards harmonisation. The discussions delved into the challenges of spectrum management and allocation, the design of future 6G network architectures, and the lessons learnt from 5G commercialisation that could shape the approach to 6G.

Dorin’s presentation, titled “Views on the NTN component of 6G”,  explored potential market segments, connectivity use cases, and the design principles needed to integrate NTNs with TNs.

The forum addressed the significant challenge of commercialising 6G; this includes exploring the question not only of “how do we achieve 6G?” but also, “why do we need it?” As the industry moves forward, understanding investment strategies, monetisation opportunities, and how 6G can help close the digital divide is key to its success.
